Full Sun Plants

The explanation of a Full Sun Plant does vary from site to site and from person to person. When a plant is labeled and tagged as Full Sun does that mean that it can absolutely not tolerate any shade at all? For the purposes of this site a full sun plant is a plant that requires 6 to 7 or more hours of direct sun during the growing season. The direct sun time could be received mostly in the morning or in the afternoon. If the direct sun is delivered in the morning, add a couple of hours of time in the sun. Afternoon sun is more direct and usually warmer so the shorter period (6 to7 hours) is acceptable. Full Sun Plants in the Southern climatic zones may vary from the above statement. Many full sun plants in the South can benefit from late afternoon shade. The shade can cool soil temperatures and ease leaf scorching.

Full Sun Plants in Northern climatic zones can usually withstand hot temperatures and so late afternoon sun will likely produce more flowers, fruit, seeds, and growth than will the same amount of time in a morning sun location. Plants, by their very evolution over time, do not always fit in a hard and fast rule of what amount of sun is acceptable. Some trail and error plantings are suggested for borderline sun applications. Soils, fertility, available micronutrients, climatic zone, available moisture, urban or country locations can all affect plants reaction to available sun. Plants are healthier and more prolific when they are planted in the proper site conditions.
