Deer Resistant Plants

Our deer resistant plants can be categorized as very resistant to somewhat resistant to the threat of being eaten by deer. Most plants are not totally deer resistant. Deer prefer bland tasting, non-odorous, and non-toxic plants. However, heavy deer populations and protracted snow cover may make many plants a food source for deer. Hungry deer will eat almost anything. Some plants that are considered deer resistant may still get eaten because of tasty new growth, easy availability and familiarity. As a general rule, try and choose plants for your deer pressured landscape that are spicy, toxic or aromatic.

Deer resistant plants vary by location as well. A plant may be resistant to deer in one region of the country but show no or little resistance in another region. Deer will target certain plants depending on familiarity, availability of alternate foods and nutritional needs. Because all of the factors are not the same from region to region, plants such as white pine may not be touched in one region but they will be feasted upon in other areas. Our category includes plants that have generally been deer resistant, but again, to be sure, attempt to find lists of resistant plants from your specific area. Also note, even after choosing plants that have deer resistant qualities, heavy deer populations may require other exclusionary methods such as deer fencing, scaring devices, and deer repellants. As deer become familiar with a tactic, you may have to implement a new one. Acceptance of the fact that deer will be part of an ongoing gardener's battle will go a long ways towards a good attitude and the challenge of trying to stymie the wily deer. Below you will find those trees, plants and flowers that we offer that have been known to be deer resistant.
