Chokeberry Bushes

The Chokeberry bush, botanically known as Aronia, is a cold hardy, deciduous shrub. Chokeberries are native to the United States, especially in the Northeast. They exhibit their flowers in the spring and produce heavy, dark fruit in the fall. Aronia is an excellent wildlife plant and they are browsed by deer and rabbits. The fruits are eaten by birds such as grouse and prairie chickens. Chokeberries can be canned and make healthy fruit drinks. Aronia berries contain very high levels of antioxidants and research has shown that antioxidants may help reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease.

Chokeberries grow well in full sunlight, but are moderately tolerant of light shade. They prefer moist well drained soils. They will do well in a soil pH of 5.6 to 7.5. They are tolerant to drought, soil compaction, and salt. There are two main species of chokeberry, the red and the black chokeberry. The chokeberry is an attractive ornamental plant for gardens. We offer several varieties of chokeberries and they are displayed below.
