Barberry - Thornless
Few Thorns But Much Color
The Thornless Barberry, Berberis thunbergii 'Thornless', is an “almost thornless” selection of green-leaved barberry. It matures into a 3'-4' globe and it is a compact rounded form of Japanese green barberry.
It has numerous tiny yellow flowers in the spring.
These are followed by small red fruit in October which persist through the winter. Birds and wildlife love them.
Its bright green summer foliage changes red, orange and yellow in the fall.
The dense mesh of thin zig zag branches have single 1/2" spines at the nodes of twigs and dense green obvate leaves, creating a dense green mound.
This barberry is excellent as a low hedge or accent plant. It is useful for barrier planting and tolerates most light exposures and soils.
