Witch hazel is a medium to large shrubby plants that can fit nicely in many landscapes. The genus name (Hamamelis) is Latin may have been taken from the Greek meaning of a service tree. There are some descriptions of witch hazel that label it as a tree but Nature Hills thinks that a dense, shrubby bush is a better description for most growing locations. There are 3 species of witch hazel that are native to North America, (H. ovalis), (H. virginiana), and (H.vernalis).

Witch hazel is also known to be called Winterbloom because of their bloom period which begins in late fall or winter. They are also popular ornamental plants due to their bunches of yellow to orange flowers because of when they appear when there is just about no other blooming plants in any landscape.

The leaves and bark of witch hazel are also used medicinally as an astringent and many over the counter products used on sores and swelling have ingredients that list witch hazel as a natural remedy.
