Willow shrubs are one of the first harbingers of spring. The furry pussy willow is one of the first to display it’s finery to the delight of winter weary denizens. Pussy willow shrubs are native to North America and Canada. They are part of genus ‘Salix’ which includes the willow tree family. Willows are wetland plants in the wild and so they can be a very good landscape plant for a wet or poorly drained area. Wildlife love willows for food and cover. Pussy willows are soft wooded tree or shrub that grows rapidly. Willows will thrive in fair to poor soils and they are easy to grow.

There are many different types of willow bushes. Some willow shrubs in this family have variegated leaves, colorful stems, and are grown in sizes both large and small. It has been reported that there are over 300 species of willows and only about 40 are tree forms. Many landscapes can be enhanced by willow shrubs because of their diversity of colors, sizes, and adaptability.

Pruning of willow shrubs is quite easy. Prune out about 1/3 of the oldest branches back to the ground. Repeating this process for three years will create an almost new shrub every year. Nature Hills offers several varieties of willows and we are constantly looking to add to our inventories.
