Pussy Willow shrubs are one of the first harbingers of spring. The furry pussy willow display is a delight for winter weary denizens. Pussy willow shrubs are native to North America and Canada. They are part of genus ‘Salix’ which includes the willow tree family. Pussy willows are wetland plants in the wild and so they can be a very good landscape plant for a wet or poorly drained area. Wildlife love pussy willows for food and cover. Pussy willows are soft wooded tree or shrub that grows rapidly. They will thrive in fair to poor soils and they are easy to grow.
Pussy willow shrubs can get to be quite large and that is fine for borders and hedges, but you may want to prune to keep the plant smaller. Pruning also creates more and larger catkin development. Prune pussy willows when they are dormant or in late winter. Remove the tops of the branches bearing the catkins and use them for decoration. Then prune out about 1/3 of the oldest branches back to the ground. Repeating this process for three years will create an almost new shrub every year.
