Lilac bushes are available in a wide variety of sizes and flower colors. Arguably, they may be one of the most fragrant flowers in the plant world. The smell of a lilac in the spring will lodge into the memory banks of a brain and remain there forever. Lilacs are very adaptable shrubs and can be used in various types of landscapes. The lilac or botanically know as Syringa is a genus of about 25 species and they originated in Europe and Asia. There are over 1000 of varieties and hybrid varieties of lilacs to choose from ranging from dwarf sizes of 5 or so feet tall to up to 30 feet tall. Lilacs are long lived and may easily out live the person who planted them.

Lilacs prefer lighter soils but will do well in well drained heavier soils. Lilacs need full sun in order for maximum bloom. They prefer slightly alkaline soil and they may not bloom if the soil is too acidic. Use small amounts of nitrogen fertilizer if the soil is very poor. Too much nitrogen will cause the growth of a lot of foliage but few flowers. Lilacs bloom on old wood. If you need to prune do so right after they finish blooming. Cutting out the older stems in the middle of the bush is also beneficial for the plant. Thin out the old stems at the base of the stem. Lilacs make excellent specimen plants, privacy screens and hedges. Nature Hills offers several varieties of lilacs and they are displayed below.
