Honeysuckle Bushes

Honeysuckle bushes belong to the botanical genus of Lonicera. The Lonicera or honeysuckle family consists of about 200 species originating in Europe, Japan, and China. Honeysuckle plants are commonly separated by the vining honeysuckles and the bush type honeysuckles. Honeysuckle plants can be deciduous or evergreen which provides a vast number of uses for this plant in the landscape. Honeysuckle is easy plants to grow. They are tough, heat tolerant and virtually indestructible. Honeysuckle produces fragrant flowers which attract hummingbirds and butterflies. Most honeysuckle also produces fruit for fall browsing by local birds.

The vining honeysuckles are used for growing on a trellis, on fences, arbors, and other lattice structures. Vining honeysuckle are also used as a ground cover and for soil erosion prevention. Honeysuckles are grown in containers and used as a cascading vine in landscapes. Shrub honeysuckles can be cared for in the same manner as the vining types. Shrub honeysuckles are used in hedges, as accent plants, ornamental plants, and foundation plantings. Most honeysuckle plant prefers full sun to light shade.
