Alpine Currant

Sun or Shade Carefree Hedge

The Alpine Currant, ‘Ribes alpinum’, is a very hardy hedge plant which can be kept trimmed anytime to any height from 18 inches to 4 feet. This plant is densely branched and will leaf all the way to the ground. It can be used as  a hedge or specimen plant.

The abundant green, glossy foliage forms a dense hedge. Grows well in sun or shade and is rarely bothered by insects or plant diseases. It produces small yellow flowers in the spring. The lobed leaves turn yellow in the fall.

The Alpine Currant can survive the coldest of winter climates with annual temperatures as low as -50° Fahrenheit. It does well from the cooler zone 2 to the mild zone 7. Alpine currant is drought tolerant and does well in urban conditions.

Birds will be attracted to the red berries it produces in the fall.
