Quick Overview
Mardi Gras Abelia, Abelia x. 'Mardi Gras', is a low growing, spreading, evergreen shrub with fragrant showy flowers. It is a dense, rounded, multi-stemmed shrub of the honeysuckle family. Displaying a green variegated foliage that is edged with creamy white margins, 'Mardi Gras' turns dark pink to red in fall. Since its small pink flowers bloom from May until frost, it becomes an excellent focal point in the landscape; provides year round interest and attracts butterflies. 'Mardi Gras' Abelia is easy to grow, and adapts to most conditions. Feed once a year with a slow release fertilizer. This semi evergreen shrub (it loses its leaves in the northern part of its growing area) is small in size: 3 feet is the average maximum. Use as a foundation plant or for mass planting; needs regular watering weekly, or more often in extreme heat. For a formal appearance, shear annually after flowering.
