Emerald Green Arborvitae

Fast-Growing, Dense Privacy Tree

The Emerald Green Arborvitae, Thuja occidentalis 'Smaragd', also known as Emerald Green Thuja is a fast-growing, hardy arborvitae.  It would make a superb privacy hedge along your property line or beside your backyard pool.  These also make an excellent wind-break or foundation plant.

“Smaragd” is Danish for “emerald”, which perfectly describes the color of this pyramid-shaped conifer.  You’ll be amazed how its dense-growing, soft-to-the touch foliage remains a vibrant emerald green all year round.

Once the Emerald Green Arborvitae is established, you won’t have to even water this fast-growing cedar.  You’ll see a foot of growth each year that will only slow when it’s 10 - 15 feet in height.  Pruning isn’t necessary either.  Even when it reaches its maximum dimensions, this Thuja will maintain its tight form.

If you decide to trim your Emerald Green Arborvitae, save a few sprigs to place around the house.  The citrus-like evergreen scent will lend a fresh bouquet to the ambience of your home, especially during the holidays.  Holiday wreaths made from the Thuja boughs are a favorite of many people.

After only one season with your Emerald Green Arborvitae you’ll see why this cultivar of arborvitae is becoming one of the most sought after landscape plants.

Love the fragrance of the Emerald green. I always use some pruned branches to spice up my house at Christmas time.
Love them but watch out for... Review by Cee

DO NOT use weed killers anywhere near these! I made the mistake of spraying a sidewalk a few feet away from my now 8' tall hedge with WeedBGone and the bottom tips of the Arborvitae branches must have picked up some spray 'drift' and turned them all brown. Fortunately, they dropped the brown ends and kept on growing! Also, we noticed one of the bushes in another hedge was turning brown and dying last year. On closer inspection we found it was COVERED in bagworms! We spent a couple hours with buckets and picked them all off (about 3 gallons of gross black worms hiding in pointed shaped pods), and then found a few more again over a couple more weeks last fall. The bush looked terrible- all brown! This spring it is recovering with lots of new growth and we expect it to make a full recovery. So now we watch for them!

I have one of these at each corner of my 2 story house. I like the look and it makes my house appear lower and longer.
