‘Sunrise Sunset’ Glows as Part of Easy Elegance® Line

By: Elisabeth Ginsburg

The moving song, “Sunrise, Sunset”, is one of the high points of the classic musical Fiddler on the Roof. Now, a new rose bearing the same name is poised to become a classic in its own right.

Rosa ‘Sunrise Sunset’, bred by renowned hybridizer Ping Lim, bears semi-double flowers of a glowing fuchsia-pink that changes to golden apricot near the center of each bloom. Every petal is illuminated by this contrast of colors, and the flowers keep coming throughout the growing season. At two to three feet tall, ‘Sunrise Sunset’ is perfect for any size garden and works equally well in containers. Bailey Nurseries has included this stunning rose in its new Easy Elegance® line of own root roses.
‘Sunrise Sunset’ comes by its stellar good looks and sturdy constitution honestly. One of its parents was ‘Aberdeen Celebration’, a spectacular Scottish-bred floribunda rose with dramatic orange blend blooms. ‘Aberdeen Celebration’ was bred at and introduced by the firm of Cocker & Sons of Aberdeen, Scotland, a company with roots that go back to 1841, and a rose breeding program that began in the 1890’s. Currently run by Mrs. Anne Cocker and her son, Alec, the nursery has the distinction of holding a royal warrant as supplier of roses to Queen Elizabeth II.

Sunrise Sunset
With such an impressive pedigree, it is no wonder that ‘Sunrise Sunset’ came through breeder Ping Lim’s demanding trials with flying colors. Like the other roses in the Easy Elegance® line, it is disease and pest resistant and designed to provide maximum garden pleasure with minimum garden work.

Unlike many commercially available varieties, ‘Sunrise Sunset’ is grown on its own roots, assuring a high degree of vigor and hardiness. It can survive most cold winters, but even under extreme conditions, when the plant’s top growth may die back to the ground, the roots will produce healthy new canes in the spring. And gardeners can rest easy, knowing that the flowers on those canes will be the same vibrant shade as those that bloomed the previous season.

With the combination of a distinguished heritage and modern virtues like hardiness and ease of care, ‘Sunrise Sunset’ represents the best of the old and the new. It is truly a rose for the twenty-first century.
